Crafting with Cardboard
Hi, I’m Donna, I’m the new Region ONE Director for California Destination Imagination. This summer I am going to write some posts that might inspire some students to hone their crafting skills!
Some people think you must go to the craft store to create something, but I promise you can probably make something epic with stuff you have around your house. I absolutely love working with cardboard. If you think the boxes are too hard to cut, you can always used boxes like what cereal comes in, after you eat the food inside, of course!
Today, I’m going to challenge you to turn off the computer, set down the phone or iPad and make something with cardboard.
You will need:
A few boxes of different sizes, and some flat pieces of cardboard. En empty egg carton also is fun to craft with. If you want to get really adventurous, if you ask nicely, they will give you a couple really big pieces of flat cardboard at Costco - from between the pallets. The tube from inside paper towels can be handy too!
Masking Tape, or packing tape
If you have a few different lids from old drinks or bottle, those can come in handy.
Other crafty doodads you already have
Scissors - always be careful with scissors and ask for help if you can’t cut it.
Markers or paint if you want to decorate it (Tissue like from gift bags, or craft paper can also work)
An idea
Here is the deal - my best projects always come from a silly idea. Think up your very own silly character, and then think of a little story about them. Like, What if you made a dog that flew. I always draft my creature first. If you don’t feel like making a 3D character, you can make a mask. For today, gather your supplies, and draw your character.
I will be back in a few days with my drawing and some tips and tricks for crafting with cardboard!
